Condition Guide

We use the following grading system for paper collectibles in our store, including luggage labels, postcards and other printed ephemera. These grades are our own descriptive guide, not an independent certification.

Excellent (E)

No noticeable flaws, creases or tears.

Very Good (VG)

Minor wear or a faint crease. Any noticeable imperfections are described in the listing.

Good (G)

Visible folds, creases, wear or a small tear. The item remains complete, with no missing paper.

Fair (F)

Heavier creasing, multiple tears or small areas of paper loss.

Poor (P)

Significant damage, substantial paper loss or fragmentary condition.

Individual condition notes

Each listing includes any identified imperfections, such as folds, creases, tears, stains, fading, repairs or paper loss. These details are important alongside the overall grade. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the item’s description.

Backings and transfers

“Gummed” indicates an adhesive-coated backing, typically activated by moisture. “Ungummed” indicates a backing without adhesive. “Waterslide decal” identifies a transfer designed to be applied using water.

For vintage items, the original adhesive or transfer material may have deteriorated with age. Adhesion and transfer performance are not guaranteed unless specifically stated as tested.

Age and edition

Condition grades describe physical condition only. They do not establish an item’s age or authenticity. Dates, original period issues and later reprints are identified separately where supported by available information. Approximate dates are marked “circa” or given as a decade.
